Appearing Bigger is always Better

Quite often a challenge arises when a room is much smaller than the client’s vision for the space. A client sees enough comfortable seating for visiting family and friends while a designer sees all the physical parameters including window walls, a fireplace, 2 doorways entering the room, etc.  This is where the right furniture and finishes make a huge difference in helping a room feel larger than it is.

Designers use lots of “tricks” to achieve certain goals within a space. This article gives some great suggestions to keep in mind if you’ve got a tight space you’re working with.

Design By Nature

There is a reason that nature is so beautiful. There is a reason that it awes and inspires us. Nature was created for us to live in and enjoy. Unless you choose to live in the great outdoors, we suggest a simpler approach to enjoying nature. Let’s bring some of the nature inside!

We can be as creative or as subtle as we want. Bring a bright floral fabric to an accent chair or install pebble tiles on your shower floor. Many of us may have wooden floors in our homes, but have you thought about accenting your walls with twigs or branches? A vase full of bright fresh flowers or potted plants may seem like an obvious solution, but a wall of birch trees wallpaper can be a welcomed surprise.

We love artwork that represents nature. Choose photographed landscapes, vibrant colored paintings of flowers or the calming tones of waterscapes. A natural wood table brings warmth into any room. Check out where you can find great reclaimed options in your area. And don’t forget the many ways stone can bring beauty into a space: walls, floors, fireplace surrounds, frames and accessories.

Be creative with how you bring nature into your home.  Just go outside, see what you are drawn to, then take some steps to creating the ultimate nature-inspired space!

Furniture Focus

Having a piece of furniture that demands attention can add visual interest and create a focal point in any room.   The focal point is the place where your eye is drawn to in design.  Most people enjoy visually interesting spaces but need a place to “rest” their eyes.  Providing a focal point is helpful to everyone experiencing a space.

Check out this gorgeous room!  There are so many amazing details vying for your attention that your eye quickly finds solace in the perfectly scaled and colored sofa.  The yellow fabric adds the right amount of drama to the space without competing with all the other beautiful decor.  This sofa has enough gumption of its own to be a focal point and to not get lost in all the adornments surrounding it.

Using a piece of furniture as the focal point in your design is often a great way to anchor your space!
